Oddly Enough
Then my gag reflex kicked in.
Who: Bono. The Edge. Adam. Larry…. U2
Where:
When:
How:
Why: It’s U2. Do I really need to explain?
What:

The Ellipse
Confetti fell from the ceiling while the high powered lights behind the stage illuminated the whole arena. One by one, Larry, Adam and the Edge arose from under the stage. Bono somehow snuck out to the front of the ellipse or maybe I wasn’t paying attention.
Great opener.
So overrated. Stale is probably the best word for this and most of
A good addition to U2’s stadium anthem arsenal
For the first 30 seconds or so, only Bono and the Edge were performing the song. Eventually Adam and Larry joined in.
Unfortunately, I suffered a massive brain cramp and thought they were playing
#2 on my requested list.
Yikes. And I thought “I will follow” was the only song they played off Boy. This was another surprising selection.
I’m totally impressed by the Edge’s silky smooth transitions between guitar and keyboard. How did this guy not drop his pick?!
“As well as our faith in God and each other, I want us to have faith in science … that God has the ability to inspire nurses and doctors” says Bono.
9) Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own
I don’t think much of this track, although it’s probably mostly due to the awful song arrangement on the album. Sounded alright live.
Bono threw on a headband and stars ‘n’ stripes jacket. Larry wheeled a mini drum kit to the front of the ellipse.
At the end of the song, Bono grabbed the drumsticks and proceeded to go ape shit on the mini drum kit because when peace fails you have……
"Read my head," Bono shouted, as the cameras zoomed in on a white headband emblazoned with a cross, the Star of David and a crescent moon. "Jesus, Jew, Mohammad, it's true,"
I originally thought I heard “Jesus, Job, Mohammad” (not the Job where you work and get money, but the Job that was horribly tortured by Satan because God allowed it)
Right after the religious bit, there was an extended “NO MORE!!!” call and response jam.
Bono pulled the headband over his eyes and did some blind man act.
Neither the outro from the Joshua Tree or Rattle & Hum versions were used. And I don’t remembered what was said this particular time.
Larry and Adam sat this one out. Bono played guitar/harmonica and the Edge played keyboards.
Another huge surprising selection, it was #6 on my request list.
The various articles from the UN declaration of human rights scrolled across the screens at the end of the song.
14) Bad (extended version)
Bono entered some kind of time warp and thinks he’s back at Wembley Stadium for Live Aid ’85, so he ended up pulling some girl out of the crowd. But realizing that he’s no longer in his 20’s, they didn’t dance. Bono ended up leaving the girl behind Larry before running back to the microphone stand to finish the song. Afterwards, Bono led the ecstatic girl back into the crowd.
Despite the pack a day habit, Bono sounded a lot like he did at Live Aid back in ’85.
15) Pride (In the Name of Love)
Early morning, April four
A shot rings out in the
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride
There was a little speech about Dr. King’s “I have a Dream”.
“So for Dr. King, sing!” Then we the fans entered an extended “Oh-wow-oh-oh-ohs” session just like on Rattle & Hum version and every live edition of Pride.
16) Where the Streets Have No Name
The beaded LED light curtains came down again around the band and this time, various African flags were shown streaming down the lights.
It's strange how this song is played over "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" and "With or without you" considering both were U2's first number 1 hits (USA) whereas Streets only reached #10 on the charts.
17) One (extended version)
“I wanted to say something about your Prime Minister Paul Martin, if I might [boos all round], and I told him I’d be a pain in the arse” So began Bono’s counsel to our leader to lead us into investing 0.7% of our total GDP into ending poverty. “Call him… tell him”
About half of the audience whipped out their cell phones into the air.
Near the end, Bono ended up pulling a group of people wearing ONE (www.one.org) shirts prompting Bono to scream “This audience, this generation has had enough! Enough of the despair! Tell Paul Martin!”
613-992-4211.
I wonder how many people found out that the first number “615-992-4211” was the wrong number. They did show the right number after, but I don’t think most people noticed.
Man oh man, this song is about a million times better live.
The band left the stage after the song.
So we, the fans, started to go crazy for an encore.
Of course they’d do an Encore. I can’t believe people actually started to
leave.
Another suprising selection.
Uh, I don’t remember what happened.
20)
Bono pulled some girl on stage and even way back in row 22, this girl looked pretty chubby. I think Bono was disappointed by this girl’s lack of moves or total shyness, so he sent her back into the crowd only to pull another girl out of the crowd. Hilarious moment. Unlike the first girl, this girl had some moves.
The couple then skipped around the perimeter of the ellipse.
You know that film “White men can’t jump”?
Here, they could’ve had “Irish can’t run”.
Afterwards, the band left the stage again. Unbelievably, some people actually headed for the exits.
Sounded good I thought.
I think they were going to play “Yahweh” but Bono announced that they were going to try something different. This was like only the 3rd – 4th time that they played this song on this tour.
It was dedicated to Dorothy Stow and her family, some of the founders of Greenpeace.
At the end of the song, Bono grabbed a spotlight and swept it around all the nosebleed sections. Afterwards, Bono, the Edge and Adam left the stage
Larry did a short drum solo before leaving the stage.
Of course, we the fans kept singing “40” for a little while longer.
How long to sing this song
How long to sing this song
How long, how long, how long
How long to sing this song
When the majority of people headed for the exits, we pretty much stopped singing unlike some other concerts where people continued sing “40” outside the arena and in the streets!
The article on the concert from the Province and some websites (and forums) helped me fill in some of the holes in my memory.
Oh yeah, afterwards I got myself a t-shirt, although it was a little steep ($45)

Since I don’t have a scanner, I tried to take a picture of my ticket. This was the best I could do.
