Funeral 2005 (Us Kids Know)
Where: PNE forum. General Admission
When: October 7, 2005
How much: ~ $40 after taxes
Disclaimer: my memory stinks, so some of us this may be inaccurate. But then I read some articles and fan forums to fill in the gaps in my memory.
My digital camera and I got to the PNE forum by 6:11 and by the rear of the building, I saw someone who looked like Nardwuar. Then after getting into the lineup, I realized it must’ve been Nardwuar. I hit myself for not getting a photo with him.
I figure there must’ve been 100-200 people ahead of me in the line, so I started regretting not coming at 5 or 5:30. However, when the doors finally opened, I managed to get to a spot 15-20 feet from the front of the stage. Hot.
Opening acts: Belle Orchestra, Wolf Parade
Didn’t know squat about the 2 opening groups. There was no sound check for the Wolf Parade, which made their set very muddy. As the Wolf Parade’s set wound down, the people in the front started to get into it.
Setlist:
1) Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
Us kids got really excited for this song. But then we became somewhat deflated for next couple of songs
2) Crown of Love
3) Headlights Look Like Diamonds
When the band first met, this was one of their first songs that they played/knew. Or something like that.
4) Neighborhood #2 (Laika)
5) Haiti
6) No Cars Go
Intermission:
Some speech about being Canadian that I really don’t remember now
7) Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles)
8) State Trooper (Bruce Springsteen)
For some reason, I thought this was ‘I'm Sleeping in a Submarine’. Talk about major brain cramp.
After the song, Win smashes his black acoustic guitar into a million pieces. “Life's too short not to destroy crappy guitars”.
9) Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
Around this time, some more rowdy people entered join the front of the crowd and everybody started to get into it again.
10) Rebellion (Lies)
The transition between power out and rebellion was supposedly really good, but I didn’t notice since I was fumbling around with my camera.
It was either this song or next, but some guy crashed the stage and staged dived onto the group of people right in front of me.
The group left the stage afterwards
11) Wake Up (1st encore)
Some lucky girl was brought onto the stage and given maracas to play. Halfway through the song, I came to the realization that they weren’t going to play “In the backseat”, so I started to record the song.
The group left the stage afterwards
12) Some new song according to Win (2nd encore)
After this song, the band marched off the stage (pied piper style) to the back of the forum playing some song (Kiss off by Violent Femmes?). I couldn’t really see over the masses behind me, so I had no clue what was happening.
Media:
I managed to take some pictures and record some videos, but my camera sucks badly, so the pictures and videos are of horrible quality. So instead, I’m stealing pictures from other sources:
Videos recorded:
Neighborhood #2 (Laika)
Haiti
Wake up (incomplete)
Warnings for these videos
1) the video quality is horrendous.
2) my hand isn’t so steady and neither was my body for stretches as well.
3) during the recording for some songs, the camera was turned sideways. On the LCD, the video adjusted itself (so up was up and down was down), so I assumed everything was going to be alright. In the end, I was left with a sideways recording.
4) My tone deaf singing.
I also recorded Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) and Rebellion (Lies), but my tone deaf singing is much more prominent in these videos. Therefore I’m not going to upload these videos. If you ever visit me and wish to see these videos, then I’ll play them for you. Otherwise, you’ll never see them.
Observations and comments:
Apparently the acoustics sucked, but since I was in the front, I really didn’t notice.
The band was switching instruments practically every track and they still sounded great. the drummer and bassist were maybe the only ones not involved in the switcheroo, but I’m not 100% sure.

On some forums, some fans (particularly older ones) were complaining about the moshing (specifically the people in the front). First of all, these people have mislabeled pushing as moshing. Moshing is where a space (ie. a circle) opens up and people start slamming into each other. Although you may be hit along the edge of the circle, for the most part, the activity was contained. Second, even with my limit concert experience, this concert didn’t even have that much pushing. Arts County Fair 2002 had way more pushing and I wasn’t even close to the stage. Damn wimpy hipsters.
Third and most importantly…….
I can’t imagine anything more lame than going to a concert to stand or sit there quietly with your thumb up your ass. Do something! Sing, dance, shout, scream, whatever! If you were in a band, imagine coming out to play for a quiet and motionless crowd. Talk about a major downer.
However, if someone doesn’t want to get involved, you should just leave them alone. Even if it is incredibly lame to do *nothing* during a concert.
/end rant
Aftermath:
Initially, when I entered the forum, I thought about buying a t-shirt, but I had no cash on me, so right after the concert, I quickly headed for the nearest ATM. Of course, I then found out that they were sold out for shirts within the first ten minutes. *Very* disappointing.
Instead I picked up the Rebellion dvd which consists of:
Rebellion (Lies) - the music video
Rebellion (Lies) - The Much Music video awards 2005
Rebellion (Lies) – Great American Music Hall January 2005
A tad pricey at $7, but alright collector’s item.
Overall:
A tad short, but with only 2 albums, that wasn’t too suprising.
Just about everything sounded better live. Only Haiti didn’t sound as good as it did on the record, but that’s just me. Until the concert, I never recognized the sheer number of “oh-oh” or other sing-a-long parts in the songs. Fortunately, this really enhanced the live experience without turning the music into cheap, trite pop songs.
Otherwise, it was best concert ever. (That includes U2)
